To me this verse neatly
sums up the famous (some would say infamous) Aussie Spirit. It evokes the
laconic, seemingly lazy Australian soldier who rises to the occasion and can be
relied upon in a crisis. Many in authority, especially in Britain, did not
share this view and constantly lamented the Australian soldiers’ attitude to
discipline and their seeming lack of respect for those in command.
